DIY Nontoxic Face Wash+Makeup Remover

DIY Nontoxic Face Wash+Makeup Remover

A little while ago I had the pleasure of doing a speaking engagement at the AZ Natural Hair Expo in Arizona where I touched on the subject of ingredients to avoid in your self care regimen (you can also see my article for 21Ninety about three toxic beauty ingredients to cut out now).

That brings us to today's post, an easy nontoxic DIY Face Wash/Makeup Remover. I’m currently traveling for the remainder of the summer, but really wanted to share this with you as it’s one of my travel (and all the time!) essentials.

Your face is the last place you want harmful chemicals. Besides the fact that they can make you break out, the chemicals in many conventional products enter your body through the skin and wreak havoc. Ain't nobody got time for that!

You will love this super simple DIY, I've included some info on different essential oils that you can use to benefit your skin-including ones that address acne, scarring and eczema.

Make sure to get reusable cotton or bamboo rounds to keep it sustainable.

  • 2 cups distilled water

  • 2 Tablespoons witch hazel

  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil

  • 2 Tablespoons plain, unscented castille soap

  • 5 drops essential oil (see below for EO suggestions and their benefits)

  1. Combine all ingredients in a glass container and shake to combine.

  2. That's it!

How To Use It

  • Shake before use, apply to reusable round (bamboo or cotton) and gently rub on face removing dirt, oil and makeup. Be careful around the eye area because it will definitely burn if it gets in them.

  • Put in a pump bottle and use as a face wash.

  • Pour onto a wet wash cloth, wash your face as you normally would.

Essential Oils to Use

  • Lavender-antibacterial, anti-fungal, helps heal scars, helps treat acne, wrinkles, psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions

  • Geranium-controls sebum production in skin, , antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, stimulates the lymphatic system to help eliminate toxins, helps fade scars

  • Carrot Seed-antiseptic, disinfectant, detoxifying, antioxidant, helps get rid of scars and improves elasticity and skin tone, great for psoriasis and eczema

  • Tea Tree-helps to heal psoriasis, eczema and scars, anti-fungal, antimicrobial, bactericidal

  • Helichrysum-anti-fungal, antiseptic, antibacterial, treats scarring, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, promotes regeneration of damaged skin, helps treat acne due to antimicrobial and antibiotic properties
