Glam Upcycled Thrift Store Dresser (Updated from Dec. 3, 2016 Original Date!)

Glam Upcycled Thrift Store Dresser (Updated from Dec. 3, 2016 Original Date!)

Well this is fun! While going through my blog drafts I came across this completed one from December 2016, just shortly after we moved to Arizona from Portland, Oregon. It was one of my first upcycling projects when we moved here. This dresser has been used for many things in our house, currently the T.V. site on it and the linens (including my super inexpensive cloth napkins) are stored there. Read on below for my easy upcycle job as well as some tips for how to make your next thrifting adventure that much more successful!

How to go from this...

To this!

Why spend upwards of $500 on a new piece of furniture when you can spend just $50 and a little elbow grease to get a sustainable and customized piece of fabulosity! It's a well-known fact that I am officially (unofficially) The Queen of Thrifting. Besides saving tons of money, I love that reusing a piece of furniture reduces the consumption of resources by recycling something that's already made. Plus, I wouldn't really say that I'm picky (yes I would) but I'm not a fan of paying good money for something that isn't exactly what I want. So, read on below to see how I easily upcycled this dresser for my bedroom for pennies on the dollar...

I found this adorable dresser at my local Goodwill, one of my favorite places to shop. I may have also found some cute vintage jewelry all for around $4 each...hey, I saved so much on the dresser I could afford them! ;-)

This is a picture of the dresser in the back of my car...it only *just* fit in the back. Which brings me to tip #1 for successfully upcycling a piece of furniture. When you're hunting for the perfect piece, make sure to bring along a tape measurer to make sure that A) it will fit in the space you want it in and B) that it will fit in your vehicle. I eyeballed the space I wanted it in and trusted that God would make it fit in my trunk, which it totally did. But just barely. Lol.

Tip #2 is one that makes all the difference for a germ-phobic thrifter like myself. Keep Clorox wipes in your car! Nothing comes into my house without at least having the bottom cleaned with Clorox wipes, then the rest of it cleaned with a combo of my Needful Things cleaner and the wipes. You can never be too careful and while inheriting a blessing, you don't want to also inherent germs, dust and dirt from who knows where.

My handsome helper and I went to town giving the dresser a light sanding with fine-grade sandpaper. The spray paint I used is really good at bonding (it's a primer and paint all in one) but with such a glossy finish on the dresser, the sanding was helpful and also gave the piece a more even finish. There were some small dents and such, which didn't bother me, but you can always sand and/or make repairs to your piece if you want it to be totally perfect. I like having some imperfections in mine, it means they were well loved and just like in people, they add character!

After the dresser was sanded, I used a towel to get the excess dust from the sanding off. This is important or you will have weird lumps on your piece when you paint it.

I wanted a really glam look so I went with a metallic gold from Krylon. This is the best paint I've found so far for bonding and even coverage on all kids of material. I ended up doing four layers of the gold with a glossy top coat.

And voila! You are done! It really is that easy, don’t forget to tag me @cazoshay_marie & #DIDwithCazoshay so I can see your upcycled creations!
